Clay Sinclair: Still Art

Aleph Contemporary is pleased to present recent works by Clay Sinclair for the exhibition 'Still Art'.

In an era defined by the frantic pace of digital consumption and the fleeting nature of the "scroll," Clay Sinclair offers a deliberate pause. The title of the exhibition is a characteristic play on words from an artist known for his wit, but its meaning runs deeper than a simple pun. As Sinclair notes: "I think I want to call it 'Still Art', which references the void at the centre of each of the works."

This "void" is both philosophical and literal. In these recent works, Sinclair explores the unconscious by incorporating materials like Musou fabric—the world’s blackest fabric, which absorbs 99.9% of all light. By placing this absolute darkness at the heart of his compositions, Sinclair creates a visual "stillness" that pulls the viewer in, contrasting the high-gloss surface of his signature reverse-painted Perspex with an abyss that refuses to reflect anything back. It is a declaration of presence in a world of ephemeral content: despite the noise of the modern age, this is still art.

'Still Art' brings together a collection that oscillates between humour and social critique through abstraction, showcasing Sinclair’s penchant for sharp social satire and observations on the inherent absurdity of the human condition. Through a vibrant palette, he utilises bold colour to lure the viewer into a world of consumerism and status, only to deliver a sudden, subversive "punchline." This impact is underpinned by a meticulous graphic precision that masterfully bridges the raw energy of street art with the sleek, polished finish of high-end design.
