WATERWAYS - 11th July - 9th August 2025

In this compelling exhibition at Aleph Contemporary, Angie Spencer invites us to experience the connection between painter and landscape through direct observation. Working en plein air from her base in Stroud in the Cotswolds, Spencer captures the ephemeral qualities of light and atmosphere that can only be witnessed firsthand in nature.

"I find that there is no substitute for direct observation. I paint best when I am immersed in the landscape that I am painting. There are colours and subtleties in nature that are so extraordinary that the human mind has little chance of recreating them in the studio. The direct effects of light and atmosphere can only ever be hinted at in a painting but there is a greater chance of capturing them if one is observing carefully from life."

Through careful study of waterways and their surrounding environments, this collection reveals Spencer's dedication to capturing nature's most fleeting moments. Each work serves as both a record of place and a meditation on the relationship between artist, landscape, and the ever-changing qualities of natural light.
