Paul Newman
The Plough, 2019
Acrylic on canvas
150 x 200 cm
Signed and dated verso

In The Plough, Paul Newman crafts a surreal and contemplative landscape that merges pastoral calm with post-industrial introspection. A white van traces dark, ambiguous tracks across a rolling countryside, leading the viewer’s gaze toward distant cooling towers—monuments of industry rising on the horizon like a modern Stonehenge.

The foreground reveals a slumped, solitary figure embedded in the earth, emitting a thought bubble of mechanical cogs—suggesting a psyche caught between natural immersion and mechanized thought. Twisted trees lean into the composition like silent spectators, their forms stylized and expressive, anchoring the scene in a world that feels both familiar and quietly uncanny.

Executed in Newman’s signature blend of romantic landscape tradition and contemporary surrealism, The Plough meditates on labour, memory, and the spectral presence of industry in the rural imagination. The van—a recurring motif in Newman’s work—stands in for the anonymous traveler, the worker, or perhaps the artist himself, navigating a terrain where history, technology, and nature quietly collide.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Contemporary artworks are generally easy to care for, but a few simple practices will help preserve them beautifully. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, excessive humidity, or heat sources. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth, and avoid using cleaning products on the surface. For works on paper or delicate media, professional framing with UV-protective glazing is recommended. If you ever have questions about conservation or display, we are happy to advise.

  • We are often asked this, but at Aleph Contemporary we believe that art should be collected with the heart, not the calculator. While some artworks may appreciate over time, this should never be the primary motivation. A meaningful collection begins with works that resonate deeply — pieces that enrich your home, your imagination, and your daily life. The true value of art lies far beyond financial return: it is an enhancement of your environment, your thinking, and your enjoyment of living with beauty.

  • We photograph all artworks professionally and colour-correct them to reflect the piece as accurately as possible. However, variations in individual screens may cause slight differences. If you’d like additional photographs or a short video in natural light, we are always happy to provide them.

  • Yes — we ship nationally and internationally. Each artwork is packed with museum-grade materials to ensure safe transit. For larger or fragile pieces, we use specialist art couriers. Shipping rates are calculated at checkout or quoted individually. UK delivery is Complimentary
